We are now officially 'Emergent Rattery." It's over 2 years since I updated the site due to rapidly changing circumstances, mostly good. To tribute our Incredible Journey, I decided to leave all old website entries intact, and simply add on.
RIP to our first rat. 2 y/o handsome minky Gus tragically died last winter from a fluke reaction to medications for an abscess. Having given away his first and only litter of babies to a new upcoming rattery, I was left alone with grieving brother Moe. Supposed to be infertile, Moe sired a litter of "miracle squeaks" 5 months later with a cagemate "Spider." Emergent Rattery was formed to develop and showcase their dad's breathtaking intelligence and athleticism, and mom's companionability Last March I opened Gus' RATOPIA in his honor with the adoption of a pregnant girl ("Millie") from Animal Services and various multi-age babies she had with her from a city seizure. She delivered 14 babies here at my home. We closed intakes during the summer due to slow adoptions and volunteer dropout, but hope to be open again soon. The reason I chose to adopt so many rats all at once, rather than a few here and there, is the sheer number of pathogens pet rats are susceptible to. Complete serology screenings cost $180 a panel, and we refuse to bring new rats in without them. With Moe now almost 3 years old, I turned over my Harley project to a new and upcoming family rattery while I focus on selecting individuals for training, study, and the operation of Gus' rescue Please contact me if you're interested in a project rat to train, or one of our lovely socialized rescues.
